What’s Barry hiding?

Diana West has a terrific piece on Jewish World Review today on the continuing Constitutional controversy involving Obama’s birth certificate.

Like the Sherlock Holmes tale involving the curious incident of the dog barking during the night, the unusual thing about this story (as with most disturbing stories involving unsavory past and present associates of Barack Obama) is the utter lack of curiosity and basic reporting we’re not seeing from our Pravda-Izvestia press, elsewhere known as “the mainstream media.”

West writes:

. . . Whether it is Jeremiah “G – d – – America” Wright, William “We didn’t do enough” Ayers, or now, Rod “F – – him” Blagojevich, Obama is never a player, never even a responsible presence in controversies involving associates past and present. In the media-filtered version of events, he’s just not even there. But in no story is what we may one day come to think of as Obama’s invisible man-hood more obvious than in the still-roiling controversy over Obama’s birth certificate.

What controversy? Anyone who relies solely on MSM outlets (and most conservative outlets) may not even know that Obama has, to this day, not authorized the state of Hawaii to release his Certificate of Live Birth – the “long form” – to prove that he is a “natural born citizen” (NBC), a Constitutional requirement of all presidents.

Instead, We, the People, have online access to an Obama document known as a Certification of Live Birth, which, as Randall Hoven explains at American Thinker blog, is a computer-generated short form that is not even accepted by the Hawaii Department of Home Lands as adequate verification of Hawaiian identity. (The Home Lands Department requires “information that is found only on the original Certificate of Live Birth,” or long form.) Further dimming the online document’s Holy Grail aspects, it has been altered – the certificate’s number has been redacted – which, according to a statement printed on the document, actually invalidates it.

Taking a page straight from the Clinton playbook, Obama’s media worshippers’ preferred ploy for silencing impudent citizens who dare question The One™’s compliance vel non with trivial things like U.S. Constitutional requirements is to dismiss them as cranks, kooks, and tin-foil conspiracy theorists unworthy of response.

Sadly some well-known conservative pundits, including David Horowitz and Michelle Malkin, tend to agree with the consensus judgment of their “respectable” liberal peers in the mainstream press echo chamber. “Shut up about the birth certificate,” Horowitz writes. He forgot to include: “Can’t we all just get along?”

While I have the highest respect for Malkin and Horowitz, I disagree with their take on this issue. Sorry Michelle, but the presence of Philip Berg’s fingerprints all over this doesn’t establish an equivalence to his “9/11 was an inside job” theories or Andrew Sullivan’s surreal “Palin wasn’t pregnant” screeds.

The myriad 9/11 conspiracy theories were extensively explored and thoroughly debunked by a number of credible experts. The Palin conspiracists don’t have a credible answer to the basic question: why would Palin pretend to be pregnant if she wasn’t? They’ve constructed an elaborate and extensive conspiracy involving friends, family, employees, and medical personnel, with no plausible motive for the existence of such conspiracy.

Here by contrast, we have a lot of smoke and mirrors and misdirection, but the one critical piece of evidence that would definitively end the speculation once and for all, like the dog that didn’t bark, is conspicuous by its absence.

Indeed, the mainstream media’s reaction to this story reminds me of a second-rate conjurer’s clumsy attempts to create misdirection. If screaming “pay no attention to the man behind the curtain” in a booming, stentorian voice won’t do the trick, I don’t see why editing the line to read “Pay not attention to The One™’s redacted birth certificate, you ignorant fool!” should be any more effective?

Thankfully, Diana West isn’t intimidated:

I disagree. I think it is nothing less than good citizenship to seek to verify that Obama is a “natural born citizen” since our elites, which include the major political parties and the MSM, failed to bring the matter to its extremely simple resolution long ago. But while important, this isn’t just a story about whether we as Americans are right or wrong to ask our president-elect the question about his original birth certificate. It is about whether our president-elect is right or wrong not to answer it.

Once again, Barack Obama is treated as though he were not even a part of this story. Those who seek to resolve the birth certificate controversy draw the fire, but not the man who causes it. Talk shows, court battles and blogs can air the issue, but it is only Obama who can put it to rest. And he can do it simply by authorizing the release of his original, “long form” birth certificate — and quickly, preferably before the Electoral College meets to validate his election on Dec. 15, but certainly before his term of office begins on Jan. 20, 2009.

Unless, of course, he has something to hide.

Full disclosure: I haven’t followed this story too closely until now — not from fear of ridicule — but on the “if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is” theory. Hat tip to my good friend Luis at Boiling Frogs who has been all over this story for weeks.

Assuming for the sake of argument that there’s nothing sinister about Obama’s birth certificate, the obvious question is why hasn’t Obama put the matter to rest? While the campaign was still going on, one possible explanation was that he was waiting for McCain and the Republicans to raise a huge outcry about his missing birth certificate so he could use it to score political points. That explanation became inoperative on Nov. 4th.

Let’s assume further that Obama has nothing to hide. Like Bartleby the scrivener, he simply prefers not to release his real birth certificate. As Luis points out, if that’s the case, then Obama’s arbitrary refusal to produce his birth certificate has burdened several federal courts, including the Supreme Court, with pointless litigation over a document he’s been ordered to produce by at least one federal district court. If there’s no substance to this controversy, then at minimum, this unnecessary Constitutional mini-crisis tellingly foreshadows how an Obama Administration will respond to the lawful exercise of authority by a co-equal branch of the federal government.

That’s why the birth certificate controversy still matters.
